About Scrap & Pig Iron trade

Steel scrap, pig iron, and direct reduced iron (DRI and HBI) are the metallic raw materials for steel making in electric arc and blast furnaces. Buyers are steel mills and foundries; sellers are scrap processors, dealers and producers. Scrap is traded by grade, such as HMS 1/2, and the contamination and the sorting quality decide the value.

How Scrap & Pig Iron is shipped

Scrap and pig iron travel in bulk carriers. DRI and HBI need special care: they can react with water and heat up, so they are shipped under strict rules for dryness and sometimes inert conditions.

What buyers and sellers compare

Buyers compare the grade, the size, the density, the share of impurities and the radioactivity inspection of scrap, and for pig iron the carbon and silicon content. For DRI and HBI they compare the metallisation, the carbon content and the size.

Questions about Scrap & Pig Iron

What is HMS 1/2 scrap?

Heavy melting steel is a common scrap grade, with a standard mix of thick and thin pieces. HMS 1 is cleaner and thicker than HMS 2, and the common trade blend is 80 to 20.

Why is DRI shipped under special rules?

It can react with water and heat up, so it must stay dry and the shipment follows safety rules.
