About Iron and Steel trade

Iron and steel products are made by steel mills and traded in large volumes: semi-finished steel such as billets and slabs, flat products such as hot rolled and cold rolled coils, long products such as rebars, wire rod and structural profiles, and pipes and tubes. Buyers are re-rollers, construction and manufacturing companies and steel distributors. The trade is large and competitive, so the standard, the mill and the delivery time are decisive.

How Iron and Steel is shipped

Steel travels on Handysize and Supramax bulk carriers and general cargo ships, in bundles, coils or loose pieces, and also in containers. Long steel and heavy coils need careful stowage and lashing, and steel needs protection from rain and seawater during loading and on the voyage.

What buyers and sellers compare

Buyers compare the standard and grade (for example ASTM, EN or GOST), the dimensions and tolerances, the chemical composition, the producing mill, the origin and the mill test certificate. Anti-dumping and import quotas in the destination country can change the choice of origin.

Questions about Iron and Steel

What is the difference between billets, slabs and coils?

Billets and slabs are semi-finished steel that is rolled further. Coils are rolled flat steel in a roll, either hot rolled (HRC) or cold rolled (CRC), and are sold to manufacturers.

Why does origin matter in steel trade?

Many countries use anti-dumping duties and import quotas on steel, so the same product can be taxed differently depending on where it was made.
