How Fertilizers is shipped

Fertilizers usually travel in bulk on Handysize, Supramax and Panamax ships, or bagged in 25 to 50 kg bags or one-tonne big bags. Some products, such as ammonium nitrate, need special handling and documents. Cargo holds are cleaned, and humidity is controlled because many fertilizers take up moisture and cake.

What buyers and sellers compare

Buyers compare the nutrient content (for example nitrogen percent in urea), granule size, moisture, the packing and the origin. Seasonal shipment windows matter: a late cargo can miss the planting season.
