How Cocoa & Coffee is shipped

Beans are mostly packed in jute or sisal bags and shipped in containers, with some bulk shipments of cocoa. Ventilation and low humidity during the voyage are important to avoid mould and quality loss.

What buyers and sellers compare

Buyers compare the origin, the grade or screen size, the moisture, the defects count, the crop year and any certification. Cupping or bean-cut tests are usually done on a sample before the lot is accepted.

Mostly in 60 or 69 kg bags inside containers, sometimes loose in container liners. The goods are sensitive to moisture, so the container is dried and ventilated.
